I had a conversation with the obstetrician on call the day I did my job shadow about marijuana (as it’s extremely popular where I live). She said that moms come in all the time who have been smoking it their entire pregnancy, and that they tend to have more complications in labor than other mothers, as she’s seen it.

That’s true about smoking in general as well, though… not just marijuana. People still don’t realise what kind of consequences smoking has on unborn babies. Even later in life those kids could develop more health issues related to it.

Now, I’m an advocate of letting people make their own choices, but smoking is one of my biggest pet peeves as a midwife.

Oh, of course, I was only mentioning marijuana because that’s what the icons were about. We also talked about cigarette smoke and how mothers tend to say “My mom did it and I turned out just fine”. The OB said, “Yes, but you don’t know that you might’ve been bigger and healthier if she hadn’t.”

Thank you so much! Me either! :) Good luck to you! It’s…. incredible. The pull towards a woman in labor is seriously something to behold. It’s hard not to feel in awe of a woman doing such a great thing, not to mention watching a woman become a mother. And even though there was so much technology and medical tools in the room, it’s impossible to ignore that birth is bloody, primal, and above all, sacred.

Judging someone else’s past experience holds no value. For her, she was rescued. This is her interpretation, and we know nothing of her situation, that is the only interpretation available to us. She can troll all she wants, don’t stoop to that level

To the Anon: She wasn't acting like she knew everything, she was curious why unnecessary things were being done, I'd want to know to0! Cutting a woman for no reason & without permission? It's cruel & wrong. Midwives or CNM are just as qualified as doctors for birth. Some work in conjunction with hospitals, birthing centers, or surgeons. Surgeons & hospitals are used only when needed, which is truly rare but nice to have when a true emergency arises. Birth is normal & natural.

I believe that there is a time and place for interventions in labor. I just didn’t think that was the time and place. I may be wrong, as I am not a doctor, that’s just my opinion.

You are not a doctor stop acting like you know everything why did you go if you were just gonna bitch? That's the problem with midwifes, you think you know everything and hospitals can't help or doctors don't know what theyre doing. If I would have had a midwife and given birth at home my baby would have died MEDICAL HELP IS OKAY TO HAVE

I am really glad you gave birth at the hospital then. I do not think I know everything. I spoke with a nurse afterward and she wasn’t sure why the episiotomy was done either. Also, Certified Nurse Midwives are every bit as qualified to take care of a woman in labor, and many of them work in hospitals.

How did you get involved with volunteering at L&D? I didn't know they let you watch the birth like that! That's so cool. Episiotomies are the things that upset me the most, ESPECIALLY when they are done without permission or even the woman's knowledge (which is most of the time). And some people (Drs included) don't even think they're done at all anymore, even when the rate at big hospitals is close to 100%

I just asked my high school to set me up. :) I had to do a Tb test, a background check, a drug screen, get a flu shot, and fill out a ton of paperwork first, but besides all that, they did it all :) yeah, I got to see everything! I was surprised.(I can no longer see what I’m typing so sorry if there are typos) She had only been pushing for 8-9 minutes and I really don’t think the doctor waited long enough for baby to stretch the perineum.

Ahhh

Okay

So I arrived at the hospital at 8 AM, got scrubbed up and set up with the nurse who was taking care of the only patient in L&D. She had been given Cervadil the night before, and was checked shortly after I arrived. .5 cm, 10-15% effaced, -3 station, and very upset to be so. She expressed irritation (dropping f-bombs left and right and yelling at just about everyone) at nothing happening; doctor put in another cervadil and we waited.

Around 11-12 she was checked again and found to be 100% effaced and 3 centimeters. After being given some narcotics for the pain beforehand, she asked for an epidural and was given one about half an hour later (she was 4 cm). She got much happier after that.

The next few (1.5-2) hours were just a bit of waiting; the nurse I was shadowing explained how she charted and the monitors to me, just little things like that. I left to get lunch, I was gone for maybe 20 minutes at the MOST and when I came back, she was 8 centimeters. i got to watch the entire delivery! it was amazing and awe-inspiring and I really do not have words for watching that little body slide out of her. The baby needed help getting started, but she pinked up in 5-6 minutes and started crying.

The doctor cut an episiotomy without asking and (in my opinion) without any necessity, which really rubbed me the wrong way. Also, I don’t think constant fetal monitoring is necessary given how unreliable it can be. But other than that, her hospital delivery wasn’t totally horrendous. I am disappointed to learn though that the hospital does not do breech vaginal births or VBACs. Sad things.

I feel like I have so much to say about it and can’t find the words. My goodness!
